Nestled within a UNESCO-designated landscape, Burren Farm Experience spans nearly 500 acres of rich, karst terrain teeming with rare flora, ancient woodlands, and archaeological treasures. As the fifth-generation custodians of this land, Cathal and Bronagh O’Rourke farm with conservation at the core—using traditional practices to safeguard the Burren’s biodiversity and heritage.
The Art of Winterage: A Living Heritage
We preserve the ancient tradition of winterage—grazing cattle on limestone karst during cooler months, a practice recently honored by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. This method not only maintains landscape health but fosters the growth of delicate, species-rich grasslands unique to the Burren.
Sustainable Farming in Practice
Inspired by the BurrenLIFE model, our approach blends ecological wisdom with farming—employing targeted grazing, scrub management, and habitat preservation to nurture biodiversity while maintaining productivity.
